Autobot or Decepticon…you choose

3 07 2009

Poison here and this week I watched ‘Transformers- revenge of the fallen‘ which was a sequel to the hit movie ‘Transformers‘. Before you go see it I will warn you that the die hard fans and those who have a mind for plot will not be pleased with this movie. If you wanna enjoy a really cool looking action flick with a hot chick in it then the movie is totally for you.

yes...the poster actually tells the entire plot of the movie.

yes...the poster actually tells the entire plot of the movie.

Sadly, I’m not here to talk to you guys about giant robots or how hot Megan Fox is but  I wanna  talk about one thing this movie left me wondering about. It left me wondering about artificial intelligence and playing with the idea of self aware robots and machines.

If machines became self aware and were able to communicate and make decisions on their own could we consider them persons? If machines somehow managed to grow to the point where they express emotions, would we consider them persons? What if a robot, take for example Optimus Prime, fell in love with a human and decided to marry them?  It all seems weird but  this is what seeing giant intelligent and self aware robots on a big screen left me to wonder. How would we really handle this?

Now I know that this question has been asked before and most people, especially those in Hollywood, like to predict the worst and think that the robots will overrun us all.  The robots take over scenario was illustrated in the movie ‘I,Robot“  if you need examples. On the other hand we have the scenarios that are illustrated in movies like ‘Bicentennial man‘, where a robot gains a sense of self and becomes determined to be considered a person by the rest of society. On the off note, if this article is going anywhere, I suggest you watch both of these movies as they are rather entertaining.

Now, back on topic, if robots were to become self aware how would you handle this? Like would it be considered slavery to force your toaster to make you toast for the rest it’s life? I personally don’t know how I would handle one of my appliances or any appliance or machine giving me lip and I don’t want to ever reach that situation.  As comic book cool as it would be to have giant sentient robots walking around I have to object to it to a point. Like look what free will and knowledge did to humanity…we commit all kinds of atrocities against each other and ourselves, so what happens when we make a machine able to do the same and somehow turns against us?

All of you intelligent readers already know that I’m not the first to ponder this and in the robot revolt scenario we would usually refer to Asimov’s three laws of robotics. Alas, it’s been proven once and again that the laws are flawed. If you watched or read ‘I, Robot’ then you would know one way or another that Asimov’s  law is flawed and in some cases where people decided to apply the ‘Zeroth law‘ which overrides all three of the original laws then a robot can in fact harm a human. Still, no law is perfect or absolute unless it’s in physics (correct me if I’m wrong) all laws have loopholes and margins for error so  these laws are no different.

Right now we can relax since the robots are far from overrunning us anytime soon. Although…we do depend on technology alot nowadays so cybermageddon might not be that far off. The closest  I know that we’ve come to creating a robot even close to able to match us is Asimo…which can’t really be considered a much of a match for us. Honestly…it’s top running speed is 6.5km an hour, I’ve seen 4 year olds do better. On the positives Asimo is a big step in robotics but it’s a baby step compared to reaching human intelligence.  Here’s a video of Asimo for you all to watch and be entertained with.

Keep me entertained with your comments!

Poison’s Pick- Jet Set Radio Future

1 07 2009

So here we are at the beginning of yet another week with The  Infection and we present yet another wonderful game selection from our personal archives. To kick off this week it’s Poison here with his pick and we have a game that has inspired him for years. We present to you  Jet Set Radio Future, available on the original X-box.

So if you didn’t see it in the trailer then we’ll have you know that this game is about roller blading. Unlike other ’sports’ videogames (if this can actually qualify as a sport videogame) this game is one of those pick up and play games that anybody would enjoy. Next to roller blading this game is also about art which is one of the reasons why it has to go on our list of games that need to be played.

The story in this game is simple, it’s about a group of futuristic Tokyo youth who go around the city on roller blades while marking their territory with their own brand of graffiti and run from the cops. There’s much more to the story but when you run it down to size that’s about it. Now when described like that it sounds extremely boring and if this game was just another roller blading  or skate game then it would be boring but when you add unique cel-shaded art and music to the mix you get one of the most awesome games ever.

To begin, the controls in this game were so easy to get a grasp on which makes for a fun pick up and play game. In all honesty the game can be fully completed in under 10 hours so this isn’t a game for a hardcore gamer or someone looking to waste away their life. There were some minor camera angle issues and some of the maps can get very confusing but if you’re not completely anal about things like that then you’ll have a good time with this game. As mentioned before the main selling point of the game is the cel-shaded art and the music. If you dont like one then you’ll like the other.

Next to the music and the cool looking artwork, the world of the game itself is very open and the concept of the game is very unique. One of the things you’ll enjoy doing around the world of Jet Set is exploring and looking for new secret places to jump off of and shortcuts to other areas. Prior to this game we have not encountered any games that incorporate art as a major part of their story like this one and we do hope for more games like this. Some more recent similar titles would be ‘Okami‘ and ‘Marc Ecko’s gettin up‘, where art plays a major part in both stories.

All in all, Poison suggests you play this game if you enjoy awesome art, music and fun game play. This game has so inspired Poison that he has decided to team up with one of  The Infection’s  featured artists, Rockpopple, to create a fan comic which is supposed to be a direct sequel to the game. So if you wanna know the full story then you’ll have to play the game. Keep your eyes out on us cause the comic is in the works, release dates will come soon.

Keep us entertained!

Lets go shopping…with Poison!

21 06 2009

Here at The Infection we all work very hard to make sure that we have something for you, the good people, to enjoy every month and we constantly need to communicate with each other in order to come up with the ideas we use to enrich, enlighten and entertain you all. One major part of our operations is being able to be contacted at anywhere and anytime thus why we all need cell phones.

Nowadays nearly every last person you know has a cellular phone and if they don’t you usually tell them that they need one. From the small child down the street to grandpa, everybody has a cell phone.  The sad thing about cell phones is that every few months there’s a new phone out on the market that will render your cell phone, which was hot and trendy when you bought it, obsolete. These new cell phones come out with features that will simply amaze you and make life so obscenely convenient it’s disgusting…so then you realize that you need to upgrade your phone. This is what our comrade Poison has realized, he needs to upgrade to keep up with the rest of the world.

So for today’s post  you the people and the rest of us at The Infection are  going to help Poison choose a brand new cell phone! Previously, Poison was equipped with the Blackberry Curve smart phone. Alas, an unfortunate accident rendered his phone unusable and since then he has been borrowing Spectrum’s Palm Treo. Now Poison has the choice of simply going out and buying another Blackberry Curve, which is quite a decent cell phone, or he can look into other options which we’ll be discussing today.

1) T-Mobile Sidekick -

The Sidekick is a cell phone that Poison has reportedly had his eye on for some time now. It boasts a full keyboard and a rather sleek look. You might all remember this phone well for being endorsed by a few celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton. The downside to this cool ass phone is that it’s expensive as hell and since it’s only available to T-Mobile subscribers it means that you have to live in the States to get it or you have to go down there and get it unlocked if you’re living somewhere else. It’s also somewhat cumbersome to carry around whereas other cell phones that boast similar features for a cheaper price are alot smaller and easy to carry. Alas, the phone does carry a hefty price tag but you are guaranteed to get one of the best phones on the market.

2) Blackberry Smartphone

Previously, as mentioned before, Poison had a Blackberry Curve that got destroyed. This was a very good phone and it served his purposes well. Unlike the T-Mobile Sidekick, this phone was available to him domestically and if he had the Blackberry data plan, he would have access to many other services available to Blackberry users. like the Sidekick it allows for full internet browsing which would allow him to update us here at The Infection more often. All of these phones also have the full keyboard available which is a must for Poison.

3) Apple iPhone-

This phone has more application on it than a Swiss army knife. Also it’s easily hacked to allow for many more features that don’t come as stock on this phone that doubles as a really great MP3 player. This phone offers constant entertainment with very much functionality which is something that a man who travels like Poison is in need of. Alas, this phone carries quite the price tag now…like the rest of Apple’s products.  The fact remains that it is one of the most popular phones to buy right now and it’s also available to Poison domestically which is a plus.

All in all, these are the phones that our friend Poison has had his eye on and now he needs your help to decide which he will get.  So what you all have to do is make a vote now, either that or if you don’t like any of the phones he wants then leave a comment and tell us which phone you think he should get instead.  Fact is that you guys need to entertain us with your votes and comments!

Poison’s pick- Game of the week: Flower

18 06 2009

Alright people, so I know that alot of you who follow us at The Infection aren’t hardcore gamers. Thus why, unlike the major websites who offer reviews of the hottest new games on the market and tell you to buy them, we’re more focused on getting titles that dont get enough recognition out into the open. Now I’ll let you all know that i’m into games that offer a unique and artistic feel to it, the story has to be told and conveyed in such a way that it grabs me while keeping me entertained with good gameplay.

Having said all that I know that my comrades here at The Infection will look at me funny for this pick as my game of the week but… for my first game of the week I’ll be talking about a very unique title I got a chance to try out this week for the Playstation 3 called ‘Flower‘.  If you look at the trailer it doesn’t tell you much about the game but I can tell you that it’s so bloody visually appealing on an HD TV. This is one of those games where I recommend you never play while under the influence of drugs because you will TRIP THE FUCK OUT. Seriously…dont do drugs and play this game.

So in this acid trip of a game you control the wind using the Sony Sixaxis wireless controller and my god do they utilize the controller well in this game. It took me a while to get used to the fact that i’m not using the analog stick to move the petal around in the wind but it was an expereince worth my time. I simply fell in love with the vibrant colours and the relaxing music that just makes you feel so at peace playing.

Your objective in this game is to guide a flower petal around the game map and gather up as many other flower petals as you can along the way in order to create an explosion of colour on screen. To you hardcore gamers out there this might not seem like much but goddamn it is a unique experience.  Another unique characteristic of the game is that there is no dialogue, the story is told through the flowers and the use of symbolism. This game is a simply poetic experience.

If you ever do wish to get this game it’s not available at stores  for sale but it is a Playstation network exclusive down loadable game. I highly suggest you get this game if you can but if not then I’ve one other game to suggest to you that offeres a similiar experience to this called Okami. Okami is yet another visually appealing unique masterpiece that I suggest you buy now for your PLaystation 2 or nintendo wii.

Anyways, the game honestly speaks for itself and the reviewers are roaring praises for it like it’s Jesus born again. If you disagree with anything here or you feel that there’s more that needs to be said about this great game then please, entertain me with your comments. Peace!

Mediocre Micro$oft

16 06 2009

Lionel’s back to close off the E3 Big 3 Report. So this is about two weeks late but as the saying goes better late than never. So continuing with The Infection’s analysis of what the big 3 did at E3 we close with Microsoft and the games that they showcased at the expo.

First I would like to hand out four awards:

The “It-wouldn’t-be-Microsoft-without-this-announcement” award: Halo: Reach. No really it would not have been a normal E3 for Microsoft without some form of Halo.

The “I-think-Microsoft-could-have-used-this-announcement” award: Fable 3, there were rumors swirling around that Lionhead Studios was going to put this out there but it looked like that was a no go. This would have definitely helped the lineup of exclusive software that Microsoft had at E3.

The “surprise announcement” award: To some gamers out there, Hideo Kojima bringing Metal Gear Solid to XBOX 360 was a shock (maybe it shouldn’t because he tried Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance on XBOX), but this time minus Solid Snake. Metal Gear Solid: Rising, under the new brand of Lightning Bolt Action (give me a minute while I puke out my previous meal from reading that), starring everyone’s favourite bishounen Raiden in his ninja outfit. Hideo Kojima is a genius, NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE CAN EVER DO THINGS LIKE HIM, and I never doubt his judgment but this time I really have to ask, why? You said Metal Gear Solid 4 could NOT fit on the Blu-Ray so….. Is this game going to be a quick money grab or is this going to be like a 10 disc epic marathon, remember this is also on the Playstation 3, so I will not pass judgment just yet, let us see what happens at TGS.

The “I-wish-I-could-kick-Microsoft’s-announcement-guy-in-the-balls” award: goes to the Final Fantasy XIII update, with the gist of the message being “we are Microsoft and we like being cockblockers to the rest of the gaming world so we payed off Square-Enix to delay the Playstation 3 version”

So, enough of me raging and on to my analysis of what Microsoft has for the near and not-so-close future:

Halo ODST → Unlike Custom Edition for the original Halo 1 this is going to be a real stand alone game, so Halo gamers rejoice. The price may be a little steep as noted at the conference; retailers have listed the game at the price a full game comes out at. This time there is no Master Chief so it will be interesting to see how this franchise sells without its franchise player. It’s Basically Halo 2 with snazzier graphics and some new maps and new modes.

Halo: Reach → As I said before this would have been bizarre if Microsoft came to E3 without its franchise player. There were some questions as to the type of game the new Halo would be and the answer was….. “Of course it’s an FPS.” So Halo purists nothing to worry about it is a shooter. Initial footage looked good, I myself have never gone deeply into the story, but it looks interesting to say the least.

Perfect Dark → You read that right, Perfect “I-wear-sexy-leather” Dark. Microsoft got the license for this game and is going to put it on XBOX Live Arcade.  I like this one as a gamer who played this on N64, back to the origins of First Person Shooters, except this time in 1080.

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment → Konami is bringing back on old JRPG back from the dead. This one should be interesting to watch to say the least.

Forza Motorsport 3 → Sharper graphics, 400 new cars, some new tracks, and some newer mechanics to the gameplay; a definite plus to a good simulation racing game. I like this game for a racing simulator and the preview from E3 looked good.

Modern Warfare 2 → This last title may not be an exclusive but looks better than ever.

Basically in terms of software Microsoft delivered where it needed to, but I don’t feel that there is a real homerun hitter out of the set of games I talked about here. I guess we have to play wait-and-see with Microsoft until shows up next which is most likely GDC, because usually Microsoft is quiet at TGS.

Just a suggestion….

15 06 2009

So this month our theme is high tech toys and trends here at The Infection but we figure that since you all know that we wont be focusing on this theme for long we would suggest a site for you guys to get some good and honest video game reviews.

Now we know that all of you out there are not gamers but even if you aren’t you should read a review first before going out to buy a video game. The problem with reviews on major sites is that they’re not down to earth and they’re aimed more towards hardcore gamers. Nothing against the hardcore gamers but the thing is…what about the people who want to know if the game is just fun?

Sadly there are barely any reviewers like that out there but now there is.  The Infection would like to present to you all,  Nemesis’ Video Game News and Reviews! . Poison is willing to stake his reputation on this man when he says that this is someone who knows what the hell he’s talking about when it comes to video games!  If you want to read a review that actually tells you if the game is good or not then here is the place to go! So if you wanna know more about anything we’ll be talking about this month concerning videogames then please feel free to direct your attention to Nemesis’ Video Game News and Reviews.

You, Me and Sony

15 06 2009

Cronus here. I’m The Infection’s good word on anime, games, and technology in general. These are my strong points, and I tend to stick to them so you’ll probably read more of me this month than most others. I tend to ramble on the general points, but when it comes down to the specs, I cut ‘em down to size. Here’s the low down on the big news from this year’s Sony E3 Conference.

A name we've seen for decades.

A name we've seen for decades.

Sony’s pulling up with this year’s E3, boasting the company’s “10-Year Life Cycle” mind-set and enforcing the idea that the PS2 is still a big hit and is growing strong 9 years since its release. This in itself is a great message to gamers in that Sony is not pushing consumers towards picking and choosing new systems and to either of those “go big or go home” or “upgrade now” policies we’ve been seeing in many industries as of late. With the large fan base still purchasing and playing them, the public can be sure that the PS2 will continue to get games and units will still be made, as Sony puts it, “…as long as consumers see value in it.” Sony announced that nearly 100 titles will be released for the system within the next year, so the console is far from dead. Of course the real money makers of the show lie within the PS3, PSP, and Playstation Network titles that will make their way to our homes.

First off on our list is of course the “worst kept secret of E3”, the PSP GO. We’ll expand more on the system in a later post concerning advancements in technology, but the short and sweet of it is that it is a purely digital system that will sell alongside the PSP 3000 and UMD formats. This isn’t all that Sony had to reveal in terms of new technologies, but we’ll save that for our later “future tech” post along with more on the PSP GO.

Now cutting the crap, let’s have the short and sweet on the titles:

  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3): Naughty Dog has done it again. They’ve taken the PS3 and turned it into the ultimate Indiana Jones engine. The E3 demo shows gameplay of Nathan Drake hopping though decrepit buildings until ambushed by a military helicopter and several armed assailants. Jumping across walkways avoiding bullets, to taking cover and shooting down bad guys, this title has it all. Naughty Dog is boasting no load screen gameplay, but we’ll see if it delivers.
  • Gran Turismo PSP (PSP): First off understand that this isn’t some port or a ‘portable’ version of Gran Turismo. It’s a full scale Gran Tursimo iteration that’s been simply placed on the PSP system, powerful enough to be considered a full title on the PS2. Fans of GT, this is what you’ve been waiting for.
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (PSP): The legend lives. 10 years after the events of Snake Eater: comes Peace Walker: A full chapter of the Metal Gear Solid Series. In 1974, Big Boss is now pursuing the creating and implementation of his “paradise”, Outer Heaven. This “missing link” in the Metal Gear series is sure to bring an end to at least half of our MGS withdrawal symptoms. Definitely a must buy for any fans. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait till next year.
  • Agent (PS3): A new title coming out from Rockstar North, this game said to show the dark world of espionage in the same way Rockstar brought the world of crime to audiences in GTA. No looks into the game yet, but keep your eyes peeled.
  • Assassin’s Creed 2 (PS3): Imagine the original AC during the Italian renaissance with Leonardo Da Vinci inventing tools for you to use during assassinations as well as more techniques and various weapons ‘discarded’ by enemies being yours to use during battles. It will also have connection bonuses with the PSP title Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines. It looks sweet.
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3): More gameplay footage, and finally some story in English, E3’s look is simply the expected for the upcoming 2010 title, but more than that is something you’ve probably thought is ridiculous if you heard it, or will once you read it.
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Online (PS3): Yes, you read it right. 13’s not even out yet, but Square-Enix is hard at work making their new cash cow, FF14. Another MMO title designed to take over for its predecessor Final Fantasy XI, the title was first revealed this year at E3, so look forward to whatever pops up on it. That is, if the online game is your cup of tea.
  • Modnation Racers(PS3): Imagine a fully 3D LittleBigPlanet that was designed purely for crazy racing. That’s about it. It’s not much, but it looks a hell of a lot of fun.
  • The Last Guardian (PS3): I have no clue of what it’s about, but the final piece in the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus series looks gigantic and beautiful. Look for more in the coming months.
  • Gran Turismo 5 (PS3): It’s been years, but it’s almost here. No no, for real this time. Polyphony Digital’s long anticipated racing sim is back and looking better than ever. Prologue, the launch demo, can’t hold a candle to the real thing. The basic formula’s the same, so just go and look at the eye candy.
  • God of War III (PS3): No words are needed. Just watch the brutality of the PS2 and PSP’s legacy. Oh, and yes, it’s a demo.

Now please don’t hurt me, after all it sounds like a shameless plug, but I want to stress one thing that Sony made abundantly clear in their E3 conference. Every PS3 title mentioned here, along with the other PS3 exclusive titles that were previewed at the conference, are not merely exclusive to PS3, “It’s only possible on the PS3.” These trailers and gameplay demos have more than abundantly proven that to be the case. Sony’s gaming industry has a bright future ahead of it, and I’m certain it’ll keep me entertained.

To NintenDO or NintenDON’T

14 06 2009

To kick off this month’s festivities here at The Infection, we feel that it’s only right to give you all a briefing on what is the annual E3 expo that has been a fueling factor towards this month’s selected theme.  E3 or the Electronic Entertainment Expo is a yearly convention where all of the computer and video game industry big shots gather to show off their new toys for the upcoming year. To illustrate the importance of this event to gamers all around the world- this is the equivalent of their new year, if the Chinese have Chinese new year then they can have E3.  During the course of this event that lasts three days, every major computer and video game nerd will be raging as the big shots make press releases and talk big about their toys. Here at The Infection we house many of those nerds, thus we’ve decided to talk about our picks from the barrel of this years big announcements beginning with Poison Apple and his picks from the Nintendo roster.

-

by: Poison Apple

Alright, first and foremost I stopped caring about anything  Nintendo had to offer me after I realized that all the fun and not so kids friendly games like Grand theft auto were never going to be on a Nintendo system.  Alas, Nintendo does still have a few titles that are good for kicks like the Smash Brothers series of games and once in a while they didn’t fail me, like when Resident Evil 4 came on on Gamecube. Sadly, we must cast aside their former glories as it is a new year in the gaming world meaning that they were once again up for judgment and possibility of redemption…

To begin, Nintendo’s press conference featured the three major titles everyone was waiting for from the familiar classic franchises of Mario, Zelda and Metroid.  On top of their returning classic hits they’ve got some new and interesting LOOKING games to boast about but in my experience with Nintendo  and with women I can tell you…looks are deceiving.

Anyways, so in this post of mine I’m going to take you all through my opinions on what Nintendo had to say at their press conference during the E3 event. If you want to see it for yourself then Nintendo has been nice enough to make footage of the conference available to the public via their E3 website. So here goes!

First up, were the big game announcements, including  brand new Mario brothers game. If you’ve never played a video game in your life then you wont know about Mario and his brother Luigi or how they starred in their own game once upon a time. To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of the Mario brothers games and the announcement of a new one doesn’t phase me at all. Now they were saying at the press conference that this new Mario brothers game offered more new and innovative gameplay than before but from what I saw it looked like the same shit with more people now and I’ll admit just a few new gimmicks. All in all, it’s the same old Mario brothers but re-wrapped and given a some new fresh toppings. I personally think that Nintendo could do better…alot better. The game is supposed to be available for the Wii and it’s going to be selling during the x-mas season so if you want it look out for it. Next, we got a brief glimpse of a couple other titles like Metroid: Other M, The Conduit and Super Mario Galaxy 2. All games that I can admit look like they’ll entertain me for a bit.

Second up,  is the new Wii fit or Wii fit plus…now those of you who know what Wii fit  is and enjoy using it then I say kudos to you all but personally I think it sucks. Like shit..if you want to work out then go and join a gym! Yes the gym can be embarrassing and more expensive but at the same time joining a gym is a good way to go and meet people and do things. Being social is very healthy and by creating games like Wii fit you’re not only helping people to stay in fit physically but you’re allowing them to seclude themselves from others and become more mentally unfit because they no longer get to communicate with others as much as before.  If you want to buy it anyways then I say to use it sparingly, like when you’re not able to go out, but try to hit the gym once in a while or go for a jog around the block every now and then instead of retreating to it.

Third up, was a hardware upgrade for the Wii. The Wii Motion Plus is an upgrade for the Nintendo Wiimote that will most likely be overpriced to death. In the press conference they showed a commercial that was supposed to make it look fly as fuck when its just an overpriced upgrade that the hope  nobody important will buy. What it does is enhance the Nintendo Wii wireless remote control experience by increasing the realism in the movements that you preform in games…or something to that desired effect. In all honesty, it looks like shit that wont fly for someone as broke and smart as myself but you can look it at yourself here. Another thing that irks me about this new technology is that Nintendo seems desperate to FORCE people into buying this new product by releasing games that can only be played with the Wii motion plus, like Red Steel 2. So even if I’ve made it quite clear that I don’t want to buy a shitty upgrade for the controller, I still will most likely have to get it. Hopefully a third party company makes one and the price will drop lower than ice age temperatures.

Fourth up, we got a long stream of crappy looking games. All of it was gimmicky and useless crap that they hope nobody important would buy.  Most of the games failed to even pique my interests as I will once again say that looks are decieving and Nintendo is a master of deception.  All in all, Nintendo’s press conference was full of shit and all they did was talk about how well they think they did in the past year along with increasing their user base to people who aren’t gamers, the ‘casual gamer’.

All in all, keep us entertained cause I know that Nintendo sure as hell won’t.

Go-go-gadget Infection!

We’ll be taking a look at some interesting and innovative new concepts as we marvel at the future and how bright or dark it may be…but you’ll have to read to find out!

All in all people, Keep us entertained!  Here’s this month’s theme song!
